Impatience/Patience

If anything teaches us to overcome impatience in a very tangible way, it is trusting that a tiny seed will, over time, grow into something almost beyond recognition.

As a little girl I once dug up the seeds for my kid’s garden to see if they were growing yet, and of course, destroyed the fragile new sprouts! A very patient mom made me a simple calender so I could cross off the days until sprouting time, and learn to wait rather than dig things up before their time.

The hollyhocks in the background of this illustration take 2 years to grow to blooming size from seed, and often die the following year, leaving one to wait another 2 years for the next blooming size plants. And of course, the bugs that eat the leaves, the diseases that cause rusty spots or downy mold, the rabbits/deer/woodchucks that chew up the plants all can delay (or destroy) months of patient expectation.

And yet with all the possibility of things that could go wrong,
don’t we all hopefully plant seeds for long term goals?

Whether its finishing an education, raising a child, saving up money for a house, starting a business, or even trying to get in shape or lose weight, the most meaningful accomplishments take time and yes, much patience.

Don’t dig up your seeds quite yet!
Wait.
Trust.
Practice Patience.
