This week’s topic on Illustration Friday is “Skinny”.
But which of my illustrations do I pick?
For those of you visiting for the first time, I am committed to making positive art for the plus-size majority, trying in my own small way to counteract some of the relentless images of super-skinny women that we are bombarded with every single day. The unnaturally thin images of women seen in magazines, on the TV or movie screens, or even as mannequins in the mall, have a powerful brainwashing effect when viewed over a lifetime.
Even if we don’t really believe that we need to be skinny in order to be attractive, valuable or loved, we waste an awful lot of time and energy feeling bad about our thighs (or bums or bellies), and sharing this misery with each other through endless conversations that start with “I’m so fat”…
Women have always come in all shapes and sizes!
Let’s learn to accept & respect the amazingly wonderful, fascinating and beautiful diversity of sizes that we all are!
What is Illustration Friday?
According to their website:
“Illustration Friday is a weekly illustration challenge. A topic is posted every Friday and then participants have all week to come up with their own interpretation.“

Hi Elizabeth! Thanks so much for leaving such a positive comment on my blog. As hard as it was for me to accept the fact through adolescence, I do agree with you now. That everybody is special, no matter what size they are. I think what you're doing here is great and I hope you get your message across to as many people as possible
beautiful work!
These two pictures make me so happy! They are joyous women living their lives. I don't have a television, and when I do encounter one somewhere, and see the super super thin women on the shows, it actually makes me feel sick. REAL women do not look like that. I see an occasion movie, and though it's not quite so bad, it really offends me that the main women characters are all unnaturally thin. I find REAL women, who, as you say, come in all shapes and sizes, much more beautiful. Yes, there ARE some women that thin, so I shouldn't knock them, but their hair is messy, or they have wonderful wrinkles around their eyes, or their elbows are knobby.
LOVE.ERR.LY!
The sketches looks so happy and nice!
I like how you color them in so vibrant!
Though I'm not a woman, but I do support big in an unusually big way;)
I love the image of the women in their summer gear! It shows such confidence, and looks as if they're saying, "Skinny…why, when there's us?" What a wonderful and healthy blog you have!
Thank you. I like your illustrations as well. Are all the beautiful women from your book?
Love your take on the plus-size woman, and how you dealt with the skinny theme!! Love em both, but I'll pick the one on the left at the beach!
I love the one in the jeans shop… lovely characters.
These are great! I love the happy women – of any size:)
Love your art. So glad I found your blog on SITS. I look forward to reading more and seeing more of your illustrations!
